Higher taxi fare to greet commuters in 2011
12/30/2010 | 07:18 PM

Higher taxi fare will greet commuters in 2011.

This, after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board on Thursday approved a petition seeking to increase the flag down rate of taxis from P30 to P40.

Aside from adjusting the flag down rate, the fare for every succeeding 250 meters will increase from P2.50 to P3.50, according to a radio report.

In an order signed by LTFRB chairman Nelson Laluces and board member Samuel Julius Garcia, the agency cited as reasons for the fare increase "inflation and the increase of the price index."

The LTFRB said it was about time to hike taxi fares in Metro Manila, as these have not been increased form a long time.

Fare adjustments will take effect mid-January, 15 days after the order’s publication in newspapers.

Meanwhile, Department of Transportation and Communication Undersecretary Dante Velasco also hinted that even the minimum jeepney fare could increase from P7 to P7.50 next year. — With Mark Merueñas, DM/KBK, GMANews.TV

II. Reaction:

As this being on the news today, for commuters like me, we will be having the hard time accepting what has been decided by LTFRB. Although the demand that was being requested by the Taxi Operators and Drivers are understandable, and knowing that the fuel and oil price has been sky rocketing, such office should have come up with something amenable with all the parties concerned more on with the public as this is considerably almost a necessity to everyone.

The flag down will obviously eat up a big chunk of an individual on a minimum daily wage. LTFRB should have addressed consumers’ concern towards the becoming of the taxi drivers before taking this into effect. As most of the drivers would seek for an additional payment before they would agree to send you to your destination. They would even reject you and choose other customers right there and then. The public has been in a dilemma with regards to these and such issues have already been raised to the right office but it is as if no one has been reprimanded.

Increasing taxi fare will surely bring big impact of the public’s inconvenience, and this would at the same time help taxi drivers cope up with their daily income after refuelling and paying the rent. But meeting half way to appease all parties concerned should be more like it. Taxi drive should really be a lot more nice and treat all customers fairly and not even ask for any amount on top of what is on the meter.
